SALE ENDS Briefs Police seek leads on 2 missing girls JAMES CITY James City County Police have issued an alert for two underage teen girls who are believed to have run off with an 18-year-old migrant worker. Investigator Alan Moore identified the girls as Clara Joyner, 14, and Heather Gilroy, 15. The girls had each told their parents they were planning to spend the night with the other. Their parents haven't seen them since Saturday, Moore said.
The girls are believed to be in the company of Johan A. Cantu, who had been doing construction work in the area and who has known one of the girls for about a year, Moore said. He said Cantu had told acquaintances that he planned to return to his home in Mexico. People with information that can help locate the girls are asked to contact Investigator Bill Gibbs at 259-5164. Man needs stitches after being mugged JAMES CITY James City County authorities are seeking two men in a robbery and maiming early Saturday involving two other men.
The incident occurred about 2:20 a.m. near Mooretown Road at Catalpa Drive, said investigator Alan Moore. Moore said the victims, both in their 40s, were standing on a corner at the intersection when they were approached by two men. One of the attackers hit one of the victims on the head with a beer bottle, while the other attacker pulled a handgun on the other 1 victim and demanded money. Moore said the man who was hit by the beer bottle required four stitches to close a cut on his head.
The victims were unable to provide detailed descriptions of their assailants, he said. Woman is beaten in robbery attempt YORK A man pistol-whipped a woman in her front yard in an attempted robbery late Saturday, police said. York Sheriff's Investigator Dennis Ivey said the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. in the 100 block of Mount Vernon Drive in the Tabb area. The gunman was waiting in her yard when the woman returned home.
He asked her for the time, and then brandished a small, silver pistol and demanded money, Ivey said. When the woman began shouting for help, the man struck her face with the pistol, then ran toward Lawson Drive. Ivey said the woman described her attacker as a slender, light-skinned black man, 18- 21 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds. He was clean-shaven and wearing a white or gray hooded sweatshirt with a stripe down the side. Toddler's hanging ruled accidental NEWPORT NEWS Police have determined that a 2-year-old boy found hanging in a closet in the 300 block of Deputy Lane Saturday night died accidentally.
Officer Harold Eley said Monday that police and a medical examiner concluded that the boy, Isaih Cosby, died of accidental strangulation. Isaih was found dead about 7:45 p.m. after he got tangled in a makeshift swing that had been fashioned out of a bathrobe belt, police said. Both ends of the belt were tied on a clothes bar, Eley said, adding that the child's neck somehow became caught in the belt. The boy lived with his parents and three siblings.
No charges are pending, Eley said. Bomb scare closes James River Bridge NEWPORT NEWS Amy Croot and her Jay Taylor were less then 10 minutes into their trip Monday morning when a motorist pulled alongside their rental truck and shouted that they had lost a backpack about a mile back on the James River Bridge. And by the time they turned around to retrieve it, a Newport News police officer had blocked the bridge while the fire department bomb squad's robot checked out a suspicious package on the bridge. The package: Taylor's blue backpack filled with clothes and toiletries. "After we showed the police officer our IDs, we watched this little robot walk up to my backpack, look it over, then carry it back," Taylor said.
After determining the pack was harmless, fire officials returned it to its owner and the couple got back on their way. The incident kept the bridge closed to traffic from 9:50 a.m. to 10:23 a.m., Newport News fire spokeswoman Dana Perry said. Croot crossed the James River Bridge as she left Newport News on her way to a new assignment with the Defense Department in Birmingham, on Monday. The couple turned around as soon as they could, at a pull in Isle of Wight.
As they returned, they could see the backpack a travel lane on the opposite span near the drawbridge. She was about to cross the bridge again to retrieve the backpack when police cars, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles passed in front of her. "We're hoping the rest of the trip isn't as eventful at the first 10 minutes," Croot said. West Nile found in 3rd Hampton bird HAMPTON The Hampton Health Department has confirmed a third case of West Nile Virus all in birds detected in the city this year. The latest case involved a blue jay from the Wythe area tested by the state last week.
So far, 22 birds have been submitted for testing. Capt. Phil Hardison, of the Smithfield Police Department, said the crane was from the construction site of the new Smithfield Foods office building. One of the crane's outriggers was left in the down position, and it snapped the pole about three feet above the ground about 10:30 a.m. Police closed off the street so Verizon workers could replace the pole, Hardison said. Verizon spokesman Paul Miller said workers restored service to about 300 customers by late afternoon.
Miller said some customers were told service would be reconnected by Wednesday night at the latest. But he said that is a worstcase scenario, and expected that everyone affected would have service back by this morning.
